Hi Hoover,

Please put this post-doc notice on the net. Many thanks.

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE
available March 1, 1995

A postdoctoral position is available now in a neurophysiology
laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. We are
interested in rules of communication between cells in central visual
pathways and in development and plasticity of the visual system.
Current questions involve linear and non-linear analysis of spatial
and temporal receptive field characteristics, the neural organization
of binocular vision, inhibitory mechanisms, and intracortical
circuits. The experiments involve recording from individual or small
groups of neurons primarily in the visual cortex. We record in acute
preparations of the cat and have plans to study the monkey visual
system. Standard neurophysiological methods are used, and we have an
elaborate setup for the detailed quantitative study of neuronal
response properties. We attempt to address fundamental questions
regarding visual information processing, and to develop
physiologically plausible models that account for our empirical data.

The person we seek should have a firm background in basic
neurophysiological methods including surgical skills and standard
analysis of data from single and perhaps multiple cell extracellular
recordings. The individual should be comfortable with quantitative
approaches to experimental design and data analysis. Our experimental
apparatus is heavily based on interconnected computer systems
(NextStep/Unix and PC based platforms) and our software is mainly
written in C. Sofware and hardware skills and familiarity with
systems analysis will be helpful.
