1995 Annual Meeting
September 10-15, 1995
Oregon Convention Center
Portland Oregon

*****ABSTRACT DEADLINE: April 10, 1995*****

Elected Officers: Vision (Ken Alexander, Chair; Lynn Olzak, Vice Chair);
Color (Qasim Zaidi, Chair, Bill Swanson, Vice-Chair); Applications of
Visual Science (Larry Thibos, Chair, Vengu Lakshminarayanan, Vice-Chair)

1. The 1995 Annual Meeting is being held in the beautiful city of
Portland, Oregon. We are working with OSA to find more attractive sites
and to plan more opportunities for members to interact across areas with
evening social/professional sessions and few, if any, parallel sessions.
In short, we're trying to take full advantage of the more intimate meeting
atmosphere not possible at some of the larger conferences our members
attend. This format also gives a unique opportunity for students to
interact with established researchers on a more personal level.

2. We are trying to reduce expenses associated with the meeting. Our
sessions will begin on Sunday, in order for everyone to take advantage of
Saturday stayover air fares, and will continue only for the days required
to schedule submitted papers. We currently anticipate ending our sessions
either Wednesday, or Thursday mid-day, depending on the number of papers
submitted.

3. Scheduled symposia and workshops cover a broad range of interests this
year. I include a list at the end to help you plan. Please start
thinking about topics for 1996. We are also actively soliciting topics
for Special Issues of JOSA.

4. You may have missed this in Optics & Photonics News:

FREDERICK IVES MEDAL/QUINN ENDOWMENT: ROBERT M. BOYNTON

"To recognize fundamental contributions to the understanding of human
color vision, and for leadership in teaching and in service to the vision
community."

Congratulations, Bob! Bob will receive the medal at the plenary
session, to be held either Tuesday or Wednesday. This is the highest
award given by the Optical Society of America, for overall distinction in
optics. Papers related to his work are especially solicited this year,
and we hope Color & Vision members will have an opportunity to extend
their personal congratulations.

5. In order to continue improving the OSA annual meeting, you will soon
be receiving a poll soliciting opinions about the meetings as they stand
now, and your ideas on how to make them the most informative and enjoyable
for everyone. PLEASE do not toss this out; we need your PROMPT input.
OSA is ready and willing to make changes to accommodate us; all we need is
your guidance on what we want-- scientifically, socially, and
aesthetically. I have listed all of your officers at the top of this
communication; please talk with us at the meetings, as well.
