Subject: color perception

I have been assuming that the "good" preservation of color
perception associated with viewing objects through
filters containing carbon black is due partly to the
"flat" absorptivity of carbob black; but I am also
assuming the color preservation is due significantly
to the unusually smooth character of the carbon black
absorption spectrum.

Could someone kindly direct me to the scientific literature on
the topic of smoothness in a filter's optical absorption -
as it relates to preservation of color perception?
Thanks in advance.
