Subject: Naomi Weisstein's 56th birthday
To: Peter <pkaiser@vml.yorku.ca>

Dear Peter, Remembering all my wonderful messages last year, especially your
joke, I would like to post an update of how I am on my 56th birthday. Jesse
says you are no longer moderator of the list, but I'm not exactly sure how to
post a message this year. So I wonder if you can help me get this on CVNet.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Last year, in response to the wonderful messages I received on my 55th
birthday, I promised I would write to everybody individually during the year to
thank them and follow up their messages. I have not had the strength to get
back to more than a few people, however. So this note updates everybody on
what is happening with me.
I remain totally bedridden and very sick, although there is new research
on CFS and I'm optimistic about some new treatments. We're still in court
fighting the insurance company's move to take away my nursing. Meanwhile, I
have started a collaboration on a series of experiments testing the Steve
Grossberg-inspired idea that neural symbolic activity, object superiority, and
spatial and temporal frequency depth effects are all aspects of the same phe-
nomeon. I have also started to write something about how cognitive neuroscience
and computational vision represent a paradigm shift. I am just completing a
memoir chapter on the Chicago Women's Liberation Rock Band and another memoir
chapter in collaboration on the Chicago Women's Liberation Union.
Here is the joke for today: what happens when you cross a deconstruction-
ist topologist with a mafioso? Answer: you get an offer you can't understand.
My love to you all,
Naomi Weisstein
