Subject: a query

Once upon a time, there was a clever paper that, with tongue
somewhat in cheek, proposed that the Xerox machine was a good
model of the human visual system. This was in the day when copiers
did not make terrible faithful grayscale copies and figures came out
with distortions that looked like various visual illusions. Do you
happen to remember the reference to this? I would be grateful for a
lead.
