Subject: evolution of smooth pursuit

There is an old question: What kind of animals have or do-not-have
smooth pursuit?

The only paper I remember on the subject is:

Walls GL (1962) The evolutionary history of eye movements.
Vision Res 2: 69-80

Supposedly, there is a good correlation between the anatomical existence
of a fovea/area-centralis and pursuit behavior. Also supposedly,
predators have fovea/area-centralae and vegetarians do not.

Has anyone really done a survey to see how well this holds up in practice?
