KEELE UNIVERSITY

Senior Lecturer/Lecturer Post in Communication & Neuroscience
Salary Scale: 27,747-31,357/15,154-26,430 Pounds Sterling.

The aim of the Department of Communication & Neuroscience is to explore the
function of the brain by research into vision, audition, and speech.

The Department is interdisciplinary in nature; its current members have
backgrounds in biology, physiology, computing, medicine, chemistry, physics,
and psychology. There are strong collaborative links with the Departments of
Computer Science and Psychology, and the North Staffordshire Hospital
Trust. The Department runs (jointly with Computer Science) an MSc course on
Machine Perception and Neurocomputing and, from next September (1996), an
undergraduate course in Neuroscience. The Neuroscience course is a major new
contribution to Keele's popular dual honours programme and will be available
in combination with a wide range of other subjects including Psychology and
Computer Science.

Keele is a campus university set within 600 acres of beautiful Staffordshire
parkland and is surrounded by some of the most attractive countryside in
England. Keele's geographical location makes it easy to travel to and from
most major English cities. The primary North-South motorway (M6) passes
close by the campus and there are excellent Inter City rail links to London,
Birmingham, and Manchester. London is less than two hours away by train and
Manchester and Birmingham international airports are approximately 45
minutes drive away. Keele is located at the border of the Peak District, the
largest National Park and excellent walking country; the Lake District is
less than 2 hours away.

We are seeking applications from neuroscientists or vision scientists who
have demonstrated a capacity for independent research and who would also
make a valuable contribution to the development of our new undergraduate
course. The applicant is expected to set up his/her own research group in an
area that complements the work of the Department. The Department is committed
to keeping teaching loads light for new staff and productive researchers.

Vision research interests of the Department currently include:

- Visual Neurophysiology (Professor Peter Hammond): receptive field
structure; excitatory and suppressive mechanisms in visual cortex; visual
sensitivity to motion.

- Visual Psychophysics and Modelling (Drs Sophie M. Wuerger and Stephen
Westland): role of chromatic information for spatial vision and movement
perception; colour encoding in natural images at different spatial scales;
artificial neural networks to model perception of small colour differences.

- Visual Evoked Potentials (Dr. D.A. Jeffreys): response properties of human
cortical mechanisms; face recognition.

- Colour Vision Deficiencies (Professor J.D. Moreland): anomaloscope
design; macular pigment; clinical applications.
