1996 Banff Annual Seminar in Cognitive Science (BASICS)

Each year in May since 1982, Western Canadian universities have jointly
hosted a conference known as BASICS (Banff Annual Seminar in Cognitive
Science). The 1996 meeting of BASICS will be held on the weekend of May
4/5.

This year's participants will present behavioural and neuroscience studies
of visual processes and memory. We have an outstanding list of speakers:

Daniel Bub (University of Victoria)
Michael Gazzaniga (University of California, Davis)
Mel Goodale (University of Western Ontario)
Colin MacLeod (University of Toronto)
Morris Moscovitch (University of Toronto)
Bruce Whittlesea (Simon Fraser University)

The conference will begin Saturday morning (May 4) and finish Sunday
afternoon (May 5). The talks are like colloquia and allow a scientist ample
time to lay out a course of research, rather than simply to discuss the
results of one or two experiments. An extensive question period and break
follows each 60 minute talk and provides sufficient time for detailed
questions and discussion.

BASICS will be held at the Banff Park Lodge (222 Lynx St., Banff, Alberta).
The Banff Park Lodge is located in the heart of the Rocky Mountain resort
town of Banff and is conveniently close to local restaurants and shopping.
A block of rooms at the Lodge has been reserved under the conference name
at the special rate of $110/night for a single ($57 per person for a
double) including tax. The registration fee is $60 for faculty and $20 for
students. We expect to begin the conference on Saturday morning at 8:45 AM
and end Sunday at 12:30 PM. The program distributed at the conference will
provide all additional information.

This year we will hold a conference banquet on Saturday night. This event
was well attended last year, as it provides a way for everyone to socialize
over dinner. We strongly urge all to register for the banquet. The cost of
the banquet is $32 per person and must be paid in advance when registering.

If you plan to attend and want a printable copy of the registration form,
it is provided at the bottom of this message. The registration deadline is
Monday, April 1, 1996. For room reservations, please phone the Banff Park
Lodge (Toll free: 800-661-9266; Fax: 403-762-3553; Alberta residents:
403-762-4433), and be sure to mention BASICS. The Lodge will accept
reservations until May 1, 1996. Those wishing to make accommodation
arrangements at other hotels will find many to choose from within the town
of Banff.

Further information about this year's BASICS conference and participants,
as well as Banff in general, can be viewed on the World Wide Web at the
