Hoover: Would you post this for me?
Last Spring, Mike Landy sent an inquiry about reprinting the Levine &
Shefner "Fundamentals of Sensation & Perception", and a number of people
responded that they plan to use the book. Brooks/Cole took all Summer to
finally tell us the story on reprints (meanwhile, we both satisfied our
needs with used copies). Here's the deal:
They would consider a print run of 500 copies, which would duplicate the 2nd
printing of the 2nd edition exactly except for two details: (1) it would be
paperback (2) there would probably be no color. It would be labeled
"Paperback Edition!", so they could hope to undercut used books. It would
cost $48/copy to print -- that translates to about $60 to the student. If
they include the color, the cost jumps to $64/copy (about $80 retail). Part
of the deal would be that they retain the rights until all 500 are sold,
meaning a 3rd edition can't come out until then. (I have no immediate plans
for a 3rd edition, although I have started thinking about one).
So, questions for anyone interested:
Would you be assigning the Paperback Edition!, and if so, roughly
how many NEW copies would you be consuming (and at what rate)?
Would you recommend printing the expensive color version or the
cheap black and white?
Would you recommend forgetting the reprint and moving (more) quickly
toward a 3rd edition?
Would you recommend forgetting it entirely and using a different book?
Any comments will be appreciated (even if they are distasteful).
