A POSTDOCTORAL POSITION will be available in Shimojo's new
laboratory of Psychophysics, CNS, Division of Biology at the
California Institute of Technology, starting sometime between
April 1st and September 1st, 1997. The main foci of the
laboratory will be visual perception, cross-modal integration of
sensory inputs, and perceptual-motor coordination. To be more
specific, the following topics will be within the range of
activities, and the candidate will be allowed to choose one or two
of them:
(1) visual surface perception, including subjective contour
stereopsis, neon color spreading, and surface transparency,
(2) visual spatial attention, including Reaction Times and the
"line motion" effect,
(3) psychophysical/computational approach to visual spatial
perception based on the Bayesian and/or the Generic View
Framework,
(4) perception without awareness,
(5) cross-modal integration of space, and perceptual-motor
coordination in VR-type of environment,
(6) implicit memory and emotional behavior.
(7) Development, aging effects, and clinical application in all of
the above mentioned.
TECHNOLOGICALLY, a magnetic stimulator (and a fMRI as a
possibility) will be available, besides standard psychophysical
equipment with an eye-movement recorder.
QUALIFICATIONS include recently acquired Ph. D. in experimental
psychology, neuroscience, optometry, or engineering.
Alternatively, a strong hard-science background (math/physics)
would be appreciated if the candidate has a commitment to do
psychophysics. Experience in animal physiology , clinical work, or
computer program may also be considered.
SALARY will start with $28,000-, and it will be commensurate
with experience.
TERM will be 1 year, though it will be extendable up to 3 years.
