POSTGRADUATE OR POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT REQUIRED FOR PROJECT ON
"SCATTERED LIGHT IN THE EYE AND ITS EFFECTS ON VISUAL PERFORMANCE"
Department of Optometry and Visual Science, City University, London
The Department of Optometry and Visual Science has obtained funding from the
Civil Aviation Authority to investigate the effects of refractive surgery on
visual performance with particular reference to the visual requirements of
aircraft pilots. The project is funded for three years and work will be
carried out at City University and at the CAA headquarters at Gatwick.
The principal objective of the project is to assess how increased scattered
light in the eye can affect visual performance. The correlation between the
parameters that describe the scatter function of the eye (i.e. the amount
and the angular distribution of scattered light) and selected measures of
visual performance will be investigated.
The visual requirements for piloting an aircraft will be evaluated
systematically by carrying out a visual task analysis on a sample of pilots
flying a variety of aircraft.
Measures of visual performance will be designed to reflect the kind of
visual tasks that a pilot may have to carry out. A large sample of the
normal population will be examined so as to establish how the scatter
function of the eye varies with age and pupil size. Scattered light and
visual performance will also be measured systematically in subjects pre and
post refractive surgery.
Applicants should have a good degree in Optometry, Physics or related
discipline.
