The University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Psychology is embarking
upon a major new hiring initiative. In addition to excellent collegial and
facility resources within the Department, new faculty will have the
opportunity to capitalize on an extraordinarily productive network that
links Psychology and other top-ranked departments to specialized research
units on campus. These units include the Harlow Primate Laboratory and
Wisconsin Regional Primate center, the Institute on Aging, and the Waisman
Center, an interdisciplinary center devoted to basic and clinical research
on a wide range of developmental processes and disorders. In addition, a
new initiative in Functional Brain Imaging and Behavior includes access to
state-of-the-art methods and hardware. For positions beginning in Fall
1997, it is anticipated that one or more appointments at the assistant
professor level will be made in Perceptual and Cognitive Science and/or
Affective Science. It is expected that subdisciplines of the applicants may
be quite varied and include cognitive psychology, cognitive and behavioral
neuroscience, animal behavior, clinical science, cultural psychology,
developmental psychology, and social and personality psychology. Candidates
who can teach structural equation modeling at the graduate level in addition
to conducting research in one of the areas listed are encouraged to apply.
Perceptual and Cognitive Science is broadly construed to include
developmental, neurobiologial, and computational approaches in addition to
more classical methodologies. New faculty will complement existing
strengths in perception and language, but the search is not limited to these
areas. Individuals studying language acquisition are particularly
encouraged to apply for one of the positions.
Affective Science, including the study of emotion and motivation, is
similarly viewed in broad terms. New faculty in this area will complement
existing strengths in the study of emotion, temperament, stress, resilience,
and cognitive and biological substrates of mood and anxiety disorders.
Applications will be accepted until November 25, 1996, although interviewing
may begin earlier. Candidates should submit a letter of application, at
least 3 letters of recommendation, a curriculum vita, and selected
reprints/preprints to either the Cognitive Science or Affective Science
Search Committee, Department of Psychology, University of Wisconsin-Madison,
1202 W. Johnson Street, Madison WI 53706-1611. The University of
Wisconsin-Madison is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer and
especially encourages women and minorities to apply. Unless confidentiality
in writing, information regarding the applicants must be released upon
request. Finalists cannot be guaranteed confidentiality.
