POSTDOC POSITION IN COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE

--------------------------------------------------------------------

A postdoc position is available beginning summer 1997 in the Brain and
Vision laboratory at the Institute for Cognitive and Computational
Sciences at Georgetown University. Research focuses on the neural bases
of visual cognition combining behavioral and imaging techniques (fMRI,
ERPs). We are especially interested in characterizing the behavioral and
neuronal processes mediating visual scene recognition. Particular
emphasis is placed upon the processes by which objects are parsed,
selected and encoded during visual recognition. We also investigate the
plastic changes within theses processes following learning and/or
altered experience. In particular, we are testing the hypothesis that
the high level visual functions which we study are enhanced in
congenitally deaf individuals, and that this behavioral enhancement is
linked to functional re-organization within visual and non-visual
cortical areas. Applicants should have a strong background and
education in cognitive neuroscience. Familiarity with (1) fMRI
techniques, (2) ERP techniques, (3) American Sign Language a plus.

The Institute offers a variety of laboratories in the field of Cognitive
Neuroscience using techniques such as single cell and optical recording,
a 7T fMRI for animal studies and a 1.5T fMRI for human subjects
(http://www.dml.georgetown.edu/depts/neurology/giccs).

Interested candidates should send a CV and a summary of relevant
research experience to Dr. Daphne Bavelier, GICCS, Georgetown
University, 3970 Reservoir Road, NW, Washington DC 20007.
