BANFF ANNUAL SEMINAR IN COGNITIVE SCIENCE: May 2 - 4, 1997
Each year in May since 1982, Western Canadian universities have jointly
hosted a conference known as BASICS (Banff Annual Seminar in Cognitive
Science). The 1997 meeting of BASICS will be held Friday May 2 to Sunday
May 4.
This year's conference considers two themes:
* Evolutionary Perspectives Of Cognition
* Conscious And Unconscious Processes And Cognition
We have an outstanding list of speakers:
Phil Merikle (University of Waterloo)
Marise Parent (University of Alberta)
Steve Pinker (MIT)
Ken Paller (Northwestern University)
David Sherry (University of Western Ontario)
John Vokey (University of Lethbridge)
The conference will begin with a reception Friday night (May 2,
approximately 7-11 pm) at the Banff Park Lodge in the Black Bear
Room. Complementary beverages and snacks will be available
(sponsorship provided by the Canadian Journal Of Experimental
Psychology and the Canadian Psychological Association).
Talks begin Saturday morning (May 3) and finish Sunday afternoon
(May 4). The talks are like colloquia and allow a scientist ample time
to lay out a course of research, rather than simply to discuss the
results of one or two experiments. An extensive question period and
break follows each 60 minute talk and provides sufficient time for
detailed questions and discussion.
BASICS will be held at the Banff Park Lodge (222 Lynx St., Banff,
Alberta). The Banff Park Lodge is located in the heart of the Rocky
Mountain resort town of Banff and is conveniently close to local
restaurants and shopping. A block of rooms at the Lodge has been
reserved under the conference name at the special rate of $95/night
for a single or double occupancy, excluding tax. This block of rooms
will be held until March 16, 1997; the conference rate is extended to
delegates three days before to three days after the conference. The
registration fee is $60 for faculty and $20 for students. We expect to
begin the conference on Saturday morning at 8:30 AM andend Sunday
at 12:30 PM. The program distributed at the conference will provide all
additional information.
If you plan to attend the conference, a printable copy of the
registration form is provided below. The registration deadline is
Monday, April 5, 1997. For room reservations, please phone the
Banff Park Lodge (Toll free: 800-661-9266; Fax: 403-762-3553;
Alberta residents: 403-762-4433), and be sure to mention BASICS.
The Lodge will accept reservations at the conference rate until
March 16, 1997. Those wishing to make accommodation
arrangements at other hotels will find many to choose from within
