THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY
FACULTY OF SCIENCE
DIVISION OF PSYCHOLOGY
PSYCHOBIOLOGY UNIT
POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW (LEVEL A - NON CONTINUING)
(TWO POSITIONS)
Applications are invited for two post-doctoral positions at Academic Level
A, one funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council and the
other by the Australian Research Council, and involving the study of neural
mechanisms underlying visual perception in the mammalian central nervous
system. Potential applicants should have a strong background in sensory
physiology and experience in electrophysiological and anatomical techniques.
Familiarity with computer programming for visual stimulus displays and data
analysis will be highly regarded.
The Psychobiology Unit in the Division is engaged primarily in research and
post-graduate training in a variety of questions related to the biological
basis of behaviour. They include the study of normal and abnormal function
of retinal ganglion cells (Prof. W.R.Levick), cortical mechanisms underlying
visual perception, attention and memory (Dr.T.R.Vidyasagar) and neuronal
plasticity in different sensory systems (Dr. M.B.Calford and Dr.
L.L.Wright). The Unit has been newly formed due to the move into the
Division of Psychology of Drs. Levick and Vidyasagar from the John Curtin
School of Medical Research, ANU and Drs. Calford and Wright from the
University of Queensland. The unit's funding is largely from external grants
that have been awarded by the National Health and Medical Research Council,
the Australian Research Council and the Ramaciotti Foundation.
The Psychobiology Unit is also a vital component of the Centre for Visual
Science which brings together a large number of investigators studying
vision in the Research School of Biological Sciences (Drs. Mark, Srinivasan,
Morgan, Maddess, Zanker, Zeil), John Curtin School of Medical Research (Drs.
G.H.Henry and R.Taylor), Research School of Physical Sciences (Dr.A.Snyder),
Division of Psychology (Drs. Cook and Brinkman) and the Research School of
Information Science and Engineering. There are also strong links to the
large neuroscience community in the John Curtin School of Medical Research.
One of the two advertised positions is funded from an ARC Large Grant to
Drs. Vidyasagar (ANU) and Dreher (Univ. of Sydney) to study the synaptic
basis of integrative neuronal interactions in the visual areas of the cat
using whole cell and multiple unit recordings. The other position is funded
by an NH&MRC Project Grant to Drs. Vidyasagar and Dreher to study the
integration of feedforward, feedback and lateral inputs in the primate
visual cortex. Excellent and state of the art facilities are available for
electrophysiological recordings from both anaesthetised and awake animal
preparations and for anatomical work. Good computational, mechanical and
electronic workshop facilities are available for research purposes. The
successful candidates will also be expected to take an active part in the
general culture of interaction and collaboration among the various groups on
campus that are interested in sensory physiology, cognitive neurosciences,
neural plasticity, developmental neurobiology and basic neurophysiology.
The positions are available for one year in the first instance, but may be
renewable for up to two more years.
