BBSRC CASE PhD STUDENTSHIP
SCHOOL OF PSYCHOLOGY
UNIVERSITY OF ST ANDREWS
UK
Dr TIM JORDAN
IN COLLABORATION WITH
BT LABORATORIES.
Applications are invited for a 3-year CASE PhD studentship investigating
the role of facial information in visual and audiovisual speech
recognition. The goal of the studentship is to identify the basic
characteristics of visible facial movement which affect visual and
audiovisual speech recognition. The successful applicant will have the
opportunity to develop his/her own ideas in this area as part of an active
research group in a well-equipped laboratory within a 5* department.
Findings will contribute to a range of "real-world" applications, including
the implementation of audiovisual speech recognition in machines and the
use of audiovisual speech in virtual reality and telecommunications
technology. Some knowledge of computer programming would be useful but is
not essential. The studentship, in collaboration with BT Laboratories at
Martlesham Heath, will be under the supervision of Dr Tim Jordan, and
conducted at the School of Psychology at St Andrews University. The
stipend will be substantially higher than normal and the studentship can
start at any time.
Further details and application forms can be obtained from the Convener,
Postgraduate Committee, School of Psychology, University of St Andrews, St
Andrews, Fife, KY16 9JU, UK.
