Subject: 1997 OSA Annual Meeting

The 1997 Optical Society Annual Meeting will be held at the new Convention
Center in Long Beach, California, on October 12-17. Submission deadline
for a 50-word abstract is THURSDAY MAY 1 (electronic submissions
available; see below). Long Beach is a lovely coastal city with quite a
few excellent restaurants within short distances. The format for Vision &
Color Research is typically that of a small "conference within a
conference". Both paper and poster options are available.

The theme of this year's meeting, "Focus on the Life Sciences", is
particularly appropriate to highlight research in basic and clinical
vision research. Accordingly, the Vision and Color Division has organized
14 diverse symposia and workshops on topics of current interest ranging
from retinal processes to computational environments. Additional symposia
of interest to many CVnet members have been organized by the Division of
Optics in Biology and Medicine. Information about the meeting and
symposia, as well as electronic submission procedures, are available on
the web, at http://www.osa.org. Click on Conferences, then Annual
Meeting.

A limited number of "New Focus Student Travel Grants" ($500) are
available. Applications are due on or before August 15, 1997, but early
submission is recommended. More information is available from OSA
(email: confserv@osa.org).

Students at the undergraduate, graduate, and early (no more than 5 years)
postdoctoral levels who submit abstracts to the Vision & Color Technical
Division are eligible for a Young Investigator Award. See the OSA call
for papers or contact Dr. Larry Thibos, Chair, Vision & Color Division
(email: thibos@ucs.indiana.edu) for more information.
