PROFESSOR OF OPTOMETRY & VISUAL SCIENCE, CITY UNIVERSITY,
LONDON, UK
Applications are invited for the above funded Chair. The oldest
Department of Optometry in the United Kingdom has teaching
responsibilities at undergraduate and postgraduate level and is
heavily involved in continuing professional development. Currently 85
undergraduates are admitted each year and there is a full time
academic staff of 14 plus 20 support staff. Primary Care Clinics are
operated under contract with Camden & Islington Health Authority
The Applied Vision Research Centre is the focus for the Departmental
research effort which includes the non-invasive investigation of basic
and applied aspects of the visual system, corneal topography and
visual function, the early detection of ocular disease and fundamental
anatomical, physiological and biochemical aspects of the visual
system. A significant proportion of research is supported by external
funding by Research Councils, Charities, and Government Departments.
Valuable working relationships have been developed with University
Departments and Hospitals throughout the United Kingdom and abroad.
The successful applicant will have an outstanding research record in
either clinical or vision related areas and, in addition to leading
the Departmental research effort, will contribute to undergraduate and
postgraduate teaching. Applications are invited from both
optometrically qualified and non-optometric candidates. There will be
an overlap with the existing holder of the Chair funded by the
University Restructuring Fund. On joining the University, the
successful applicant will be expected to assume the Headship of the
Department for an initial 5 years.
This is a continuing professorial appointment (the Headship will be
fixed term) and the salary will be on the professorial scale.
