The Department of Visual System Analysis is a collaboration between The
University of Amsterdam and The Netherlands Ophthalmic Research Institute.
The department studies the processes in the eye and in the brain that
underly visual perception. Research topics include the optical
characteristics of the eye, the processing of visual information by the
retina, and the processing of visual information in the brain. Using a
variety of electrophysiological techniques (Single-, Multi-unit,
Patch-Clamp, VEP, EEG, MEG), neuronal activity is recorded from humans and
experimental animals.
The department has currently available a

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Neurophysiology

A two year contract will be offered, with a possible prolongation of one
year. The position is available for the project 'the neural basis of
conscious visual perception'. The project aims at elucidating the role of
cortico-cortical feedback projections in the generation of late onset
modulation of neuronal activity in V1, that is strongly related to
perception. The goal is to find a relation between feedback and late onset
modulation on the one hand and conscious perception on the other hand.
Single and multi-unit activity is recorded in awake monkeys, that are
trained to communicate their percept by making eye-movements to visual
targets. Techniques involved are: single and multi-unit recordings in awake
monkey visual cortex, cortical lesions, visual psychophysics. Applicants
will be selected on the basis of relevant theoretical and practical expertise.

Applications can be sent to the head of the department, Prof. Dr. Henk
Spekreijse, or to the P.I. of the project Dr. Victor A.F. Lamme. The
