Career opportunity at Johns Hopkins: low vision rehabilitation physician
(O.D./M.D.)

August 7, 1997

The Lions Low Vision Service at the Johns Hopkins University's Wilmer Eye
Institute is seeking candidates for a full-time faculty position
specializing in low vision rehabilitation, who will operate as the
physician in a multidisciplinary low vision rehab team. Other members of
this team are a technician performing visual impairment and performance
testing, one or more part-time low vision optometrists, a part-time low
vision/retina specialist, and two or more vision rehabilitation therapists.
The team carries out a process of evaluation, patient education, and
rehabilitation planning, coordination, and therapy. The Service operates
within the Lions Vision Research and Rehabilitation Center, in close
conjunction with the research team, and has over the past three years
pioneered the introduction of the head-mounted Low Vision Enhancement
System technology, and made a concerted effort to develop a model of low
vision rehabilitation that will bring the field within the mainstream of
the health care system.

The Service is entering an expansion phase that promises to bring unique
opportunities for low vision rehabilitation practice, teaching, policy
development, and research. In the clinical realm there are existing and
planned collaborations with private ophthalmologic specialty practices,
associated ophthalmology departments in other hospitals, outpatient
rehabilitation services, state and county agencies, and retirement
communities. In the area of education there are professional training
courses for beginning low vision care providers, occupational therapists,
and ophthalmic technicians, as well as the teaching curriculum for
ophthalmology residents. In the policy development area we will be
continuing and intensifying our discussions with Medicare and other third-
party payors. In the research area, our center has a strong track record
in the development of patient assessment and outcome measurement
techniques, training methodologies, and assistive technology. The person
we seek will play a central role in these efforts and will have the
opportunity to create a position of academic and clinical authority.

The applicant for this position should be trained as an optometrist or
ophthalmologist, with additional specialty training in low vision
rehabilitation. The ideal candidate has a demonstrated ability to care for
low vision patients of all ages and wide-ranging visual function levels, to
work with other rehabilitation professionals, to communicate the role of
low vision rehabilitation to other eye care professionals in practice and
training through lecturing and publishing, and to deal effectively with
third party payors and regulatory bodies.

Salary for this position is commensurate with academic rank and experience
and includes generous benefits.

We expect the new faculty member to begin work no later than October 15,
1997. In view of this timetable we ask qualified, interested individuals
to submit a letter of application, current resume, and the names and phone
numbers of two references by August 22 to the director of the Lions Vision
Research and Rehabilitation Center:

Robert W. Massof, Ph.D.
Professor of Ophthalmology and Neuroscience
Johns Hopkins University Lions Vision Center
550 N. Broadway, 6th floor
Baltimore, MD 21205-2020

E-mail: bob@lions.med.jhu.edu

Questions about this position can be directed to Dr Massof or to the
director of the Low Vision Service, Dr Gislin Dagnelie, at (410) 502 6445
or gislin@lions.med.jhu.edu.
