Dear CVNET members,

Alexander Skavenski died early on the morning of
September 30 th.30 after a 10 month battle with lung cancer.
Alex was a well known vision scientist who acted as
an Editor for Vision Research for many years in
the area of eye movements. He was know for elegant
research on visual localization and also first showed,
with Steven Heinen, a change in V1 receptive fields
of adult monkey following ablation of the fovea. He
obtained his PhD in 1970 from Bob Steinman at the
University of Maryland, with whom he retained a life-long
connection, and by David Robinson at Johns Hopkins
on a Post-Doc.
Alex was a mainstay of the Psychology
Department at Northeastern University where he
had served as Chair and in the past few years
created and then directed the behavioural
neoroscience program. His PhD students and post-docs
include Steven Whittaker, George Timerblake, Daniel
Kurylo, Rose-Marie Rhine, Al Witkovsky, Ron
Hanson, Steven Heinen, and Ceil Accocella, all
of whose research lives were strongly influenced
by Alex. He was a gifted teacher and inspired many
other graduate and undergraduate students to ponder
intelligently the mysteries of vision. His friends and
colleagues will miss him greatly.
He is survived by his wife Nina, son Matt, and daughter
Stephanie.

Adam Reeves.
