Cognitive Psychology. The Department of Psychology at North Dakota State
University announces a tenure-track Assistant Professor
opening in cognitive psychology beginning August 15, 1998. We are
interested in candidates in any area of cognitive psychology and
cognitive science broadly defined. Examples include (but are not limited
to): pattern recognition, executive function, attention, spatial
cognition, memory, categorization, problem solving, metacognition,
language, social cognition, human factors, etc. Research approaches
may include (but are not limited to): AI, developmental, modeling,
psychophysiology, and special populations. There are 3 major hospitals
(including a VA), a medical school Department of Neuroscience, and a
neuroscience research institute in the community which offer
opportunities for collaboration. The department does not have facilities
for conducting research with animals. Therefore, applications from
individuals whose research requires animals will not be considered.
Our teaching needs are fairly open. Applicants must be able to teach
research methods and courses in cognitive psychology, but beyond
that, we are flexible. We should note that an applicant's chances might
improve if he or she could teach our first-year graduate course in
statistics (ANOVA and Regression), and we are interested in faculty who are
willing to teach our large lectures courses (about 400 students)
in introductory psychology.
The position requires the Ph.D. We will consider strong A.B.D. candidates
for a special appointment as Instructor until the degree is
complete. The minimum qualifications for the position are: strong potential
for research using human subjects in cognitive psychology,
teaching competence in psychological research methods and courses in
cognitive psychology, proximity to completed Ph.D., an ability to
interact effectively with colleagues and students, and effective
interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. The preferred
qualifications for the positions are a completed Ph.D. and the ability to
teach a variety of courses within our curriculum (from among
advanced undergraduate courses in cognitive psychology, undergraduate
research methods, history and systems, advanced experimental
design and statistics, applied research methods, introductory psychology,
human sexuality, and developmental psychology).
Our 12-member department grants the M.S. degree in general experimental and
clinical psychology. When making hiring decisions our
faculty will weigh the above criteria as follows (in decreasing order of
importance): strong potential for research using human subjects in the
cognitive psychology area; teaching competence in areas of research methods
and cognitive psychology; proximity to completed Ph.D.;
ability to interact effectively with colleagues and students; demonstrated
interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; ability to teach
a variety of courses in our curriculum; and completed Ph.D.
We have a congenial faculty who are supportive of productive research
programs and quality instruction. All faculty are involved in
supervising graduate and undergraduate research, and directing master's and
honor's theses. We have excellent human research facilities
and start-up funds are available. The teaching load is 3 semester courses
per year. All of these contribute to our productive research
programs and quality instruction. For more information about our department
and university, see our website:

Fargo-Moorhead is a pleasant, safe, and growing community of approximately
130,000. As the largest population center in the region,
Fargo-Moorhead serves as a center for entertainment, finance, medical
services, and distribution for a large geographic area. Two
universities (North Dakota State University, Moorhead State University),
and one private liberal arts college (Concordia College) are located
in Fargo-Moorhead. There is ample shopping, good public schools, community
symphony, opera, dance companies, several art galleries,
minor league baseball and hockey, and intercollegiate athletics. Winters
are cold, though snowfall is moderate. Summers tend to be dry and
very pleasant with occasional hot stretches. Sun, clear skies, and clean
air predominate the year round. Outdoor sports and activities are
popular. Canoeing, camping, cycling, softball, and soccer are popular
summer pastimes. Winter pastimes include cross-country skiing,
skating, and snowmobiling. The city has an excellent park system which
includes several challenging golf courses, and a bicycle/running path
along the Red River which spans most of the city and becomes a ski trail
during colder months. We are one hour away from a major resort
area in the Minnesota "lakes country" and two hours from Itasca State Park
and its wilderness areas, which are adjacent to the Boundary
Waters Canoe Area. Central and western North Dakota offer beautiful hiking,
camping, and related opportunities in the Badlands, national
grasslands, and numerous river valleys. Winnipeg, Manitoba is less than a
four hour drive to the north and Minneapolis-St. Paul is an equal
distance to the southeast.
To apply, send a cover letter describing research and teaching interests
and accomplishments, a curriculum vita, copies of publications and
other supporting materials, available summaries of teaching evaluations,
and the names, addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail
addresses of three individuals who can provide a letter of recommendation.
Please do not have letters sent. We will request letters from
references at a later date. This search will be conducted in compliance
with North Dakota's open-records law. Submit materials to: Verlin
