Vision Research Scientist, DERA Fort Halstead

The Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) is an agency of the UK Ministry of Defence,
incorporating the bulk of the Ministry's non-nuclear research, technology and test and evaluation
establishments. A small team from the Missile Technology Department, Weapons Systems Sector,
is based at DERA Fort Halstead, Sevenoaks, Kent and carries out long term innovative research
into the mechanisms of biological vision systems and their application to machine vision,
automatic surveillance and recognition techniques. The work involves image processing and
computer modelling using standard and novel filtering techniques, development of new algorithms
and the use of large scale neural simulations for automatic image segmentation and target
detection/classification in cluttered scenes.

A post is available in the Vision Research group and as part of this small specialised team,
you will be expected to be highly motivated and be able to develop, discuss and defend ideas
applicable in the above field. Facilities exist for the running of psychophysical experiments
in connection with the research being conducted and you will be required to conduct psychometric
investigations of human vision as applied to the design and assessment of opto-electronics systems.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will have a good degree in psychology, biological systems or neuro
biology, plus two years experience, or HND/HNC plus five years experience. A knowledge of the
biological visual system is strongly desired. A good knowledge of UNIX/C/X programming is
essential.

The starting salary will be dependent on age, qualification and experience and will be in
the range 20000 pounds to 25000 pounds. An excellent benefits package includes a
non-contributory pension and generous holidays. This is a permanent post.

We also have vacancies in a wide range of disciplines in our other divisions in DERA.
Anyone who reaches a suitable standard in this campaign but is not appointed may be
considered for other specialist vacancies. Alternatively, we shall be happy to consider
applications for such jobs for those eligible for the continuous central recruitment scheme.

race or disability. Further details on the post can be obtained from
