A postdoctoral candidate is being sought for in vivo studies of
accommodation and presbyopia in monkeys. We are stimulating accommodation
via the efferent neuromuscular pathway and recording the movement of ocular
structures.

Degree and area of specialization
Ph.D. degree in an area relating to ocular physiology, physiological optics,
accommodation or presbyopia.

Type of relevant work experience
Prior postdoctoral experience is beneficial, although not essential. Prior
research experience in one or more of the following areas would be helpful:
working with monkeys, steriotaxic surgery in the brain, ocular and/or CNS
electrophysiological stimulation, ocular imaging, refractive measurements,
ocular surgery, physiological optics, image processing/analysis, programming
in C++, VisualBasic on the IBM-PC platform. Good interpersonal, technical,
organization, administrative skills, independent initiative, communication
skills and a good publication record are expected.

Principal Duties
The project entails performing steriotaxic midbrain electrode implant
surgeries in cynomolgus and rhesus monkeys and performing minor ocular
surgeries, electrophysiological stimulation, videographic recording and
subsequently image analysis of the experimental sessions. The project will
involve coordinating staff from our laboratory, the Regional Primate Center,
and other Ophthalmology colleagues from the department, the University of
Wisconsin and other universities; therefore it is mandatory that the
individual have excellent organizational skills in order that the projects
can proceed efficiently in terms of time, animal, material and personnel
requirements. The candidate will be expected to identify broader research
problems, design research methodologies, perform and supervise the research,
prepare results for presentation to professional organizations and scholarly
publications and assist in the preparation of applications for independent
extramural funding in this area of research within a limited time frame.
