University of Wolverhampton Psychology Division
Research Assistant in Psychology (Visual Perception)
Contrast Perception in Diabetes
The advertised post is for a Research Assistant funded by the University.
Candidates should possess a 1st/2:1 in Psychology, or a discipline related
to vision sciences. A post graduate qualification in research methods,
psychology or vision science is desirable. An enthusiasm for research,
evidence of good research skills, the ability to take initiative in research
and work without constant supervision are required. The ideal candidate
will have experience of psychophysical techniques and experience in working
with the Cambridge Research Systems Visual Stimulus Generator, although
this is not essential. A basic knowledge of computer programming is essential,
preferably in a higher level language such as C / Pascal.
The Psychology Division comprises 24 members of lecturing staff as well as
research staff and postgraduates. The Visual Perception Laboratory is fully
equipped with excellent research facilities as well as standard clinical
tests.
This project is being carried out in collaboration with the Wolverhampton and
Midland Counties Eye Infirmary which is located not far from the University.
The project is concerned with diabetes and contrast perception. Diabetic
retinopathy is one of the most important complications associated with
diabetes,
and it is the main cause of blindness in the working UK population
(Banford et al.,
1994; Thompson et al., 1989). However there is disagreement surrounding the
aspects of visual function which are affected in the early stages of
retinopathy.
Disruption of both colour vision and spatial vision have frequently been
documented.
The aim of the present study is to investigate suprathreshold contrast
perception.
