BANFF ANNUAL SEMINAR IN COGNITIVE SCIENCE: May 1 - 3, 1998
Each year in May since 1982, Western Canadian universities have jointly
hosted a conference known as BASICS (Banff Annual Seminar in Cognitive
Science). The 1998 meeting of BASICS will be held Friday May 1 to Sunday
May 3.
This year's conference concerns "Functional Neuroimaging of Cognition". The
invited speakers will describe PET and fmri findings across a range of
cognitive domains: attention, perception, language, working memory,
episodic memory, semantic memory, and aging.
We have an outstanding list of speakers:
Jeffrey Binder (Wisconsin) -- Language
Roberto Cabeza (U Alberta) -- Aging
Mark D'Esposito (U Penn) -- Working Memory
John Gabrieli (Stanford) -- Episodic Memory
Nancy Kanwisher (MIT) -- Visual Perception
George Mangun (UC Davis) -- Visual Attention
Alex Martin (NIH) -- Semantic Memory
The conference will begin with a **poster session** and reception Friday
evening, May 1 (7:30-10 PM) at the Banff Park Lodge in the Black Bear Room.
All participants are invited to present a poster. Graduate students and
postdoctoral students are especially encouraged to present. Posters can be
concerned with any aspect of cognitive science or cognitive neuroscience.
Invited presentations begin Saturday, May 2 (8 AM), and finish Sunday, May
3 (12 PM). These presentations are like colloquia and allow a scientist
ample time to lay out a course of research, rather than simply to discuss
the results of one or two experiments. An extensive question period and
break follows each 60 minute presentation and provides sufficient time for
detailed questions and discussion.
BASICS will be held at the Banff Park Lodge (222 Lynx St., Banff, Alberta).
The Banff Park Lodge is located in the heart of the Rocky Mountain resort
town of Banff and is conveniently close to local restaurants and shopping.
A block of rooms at the Lodge has been reserved under the conference name
at the special rate of $99/night for a single or double occupancy,
excluding tax. This block of rooms will be held until March 15, 1998; the
conference rate is extended to delegates three days before to three days
after the conference.
The registration fee is $60 for faculty and $20 for students. The program
distributed at the conference will provide all additional information.
If you plan to attend the conference, a printable copy of the registration
form is provided below. Please send in your registration before Monday,
April 6, 1998. For room reservations, please phone the Banff Park Lodge
(Toll free: 800-661-9266; Fax: 403-762-3553; Alberta residents:
403-762-4433), and be sure to mention BASICS. The Lodge will accept
reservations at the conference rate until March 15, 1998. Those wishing to
make accommodation arrangements at other hotels will find many to choose
from within the town of Banff (for general reservation information call:
1-800-661-1676). For Alberta Tourism information call: 800-661-8888; and
