COLLEGE LABORATORY TECHNICIAN FOR THE PSYCHOLOGY
DEPARTMENT AT QUEENS COLLEGE
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The responsibilities of the Psychology Department COLLEGE
LABORATORY TECHNICIAN (CLT) are to provide support for electronics
needs of the faculty and teaching laboratories and offices, and to
maintain the computers and associated equipment in the faculty and
undergraduate laboratories. Other responsibilities include, but
are not limited to, maintenance of the departmental audiovisual
equipment, repair and upkeep of non-computer facilities
(conditioning equipment, etc), maintenance of inventory of hardware
and software, and organization of equipment storage.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
ELECTRONICS:
The CLT will be required to design, implement, test and install
analog and digital electronic devices used in research labs and
teaching labs and repair and modify existing electronic equipment
and devices as needed.
COMPUTERS:
The approximately 100 IBM-compatible computers used in the
department require general hardware, software, and networking
support. This support will include installation, repair, and
upgrading of computers and peripheral equipment. Responsibilities
will also include configuration, operation and upgrade of different
Microsoft operating systems and major applications; providing
advice on selection and purchase of software and hardware, and
tutoring individuals as needed; support for web browser
applications, special projects, and systems administration of
servers in faculty and teaching laboratories.
OTHER:
Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to,
maintenance of the departmental audiovisual equipment, repair and
upkeep of non-computer facilities, maintenance of inventory of
hardware and software, organization of equipment storage, and
occasional purchasing.
QUALIFICATIONS
A high school diploma and relevant employment experience is
required. An advanced degree is desirable and may be substituted
for some part of the experience. Experience should include
familiarity with some or all of the following: analog and digital
circuitry, PC operation, installation, configuration and
hardware/software applications; installing and configuring
microcomputer systems in a networked computing environment, and in
applying diagnostic techniques for problem troubleshooting;
experience with Microsoft network applications, including NT.
Familiarity with application software such as word processing,
spreadsheet, data base and presentation programs is also desirable,
as is experience in writing and debugging software programs using
Basic and C languages.

The candidate should also possess oral and written
communication skills to interact effectively with a range of
individuals, including faculty, academic staff, colleagues,
students, vendors, and contractors. The candidate should also be
able to
communicate technical issues to non-technical users, and to
independently plan and organize work, manage priorities, and
utilize available resources to complete quality work within time
constraints.
SALARY
The salary range is $23,197-36,452, depending upon qualifications
and experience. Excellent fringe benefits.
