There is, understandably, some confusion about the reference format to use
in preparing Vision Research manuscripts. This message, which summarizes
an email from Elsevier, should clear things up.
(1) Submit new manuscripts with references in the APA style used by the
journal for many years. Do NOT follow the "Instructions to Authors" in
the latest issue of Vision Research (#10), which was printed before the
APA style was restored. Prior issues have the correct style.
(2) Existing manuscripts will be published in whatever style proofs have
been set in order to avoid substantial delay in publishing these papers.
An author who receives proofs in one style (e.g. numerical) should not
change it to the other (e.g. APA). However, where an author finds in
proof what amounts to inappropriate editing (e.g. "Contrary to the
suggestion of [8], but in agreement with [9] ..."), he/she should feel
free to make appropriate changes on the proof and/or (if systematic and
widespread) give direction to Elsevier Production to make the changes and,
if required, to reissue the proofs.
(3) Consistent APA style will be adopted in 1999 (Volume 39 No. 1).
Until then some issues will inevitably contain mixed styles.
