To all Vision Scientists

We are sorry to report the death of one of the long-standing members of
Smith-Kettlewell, Alex Cogan, on Oct 12th, at his home. Alex came to the
US in 1974 as a Russian immigrant and contributed his searching and
philosophical intelligence to our ethos in the ensuing decades. His main
focus
of interest was binocular vision and his publications ranged from issues of
horopter geometry to the etiology of strabismus. He was always alert to
the philosophical questions of perception and awareness that lie at the
heart of the field of visual processing, and addressed this in empirical
studies of the color perception of temporal chromatic mixtures. Alex's
convivial and appreciative spirit will long be missed in our community.
