**Postdoctoral and Graduate Student Opportunities in Vision Research at
Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia**
Several positions are available for postdoctoral fellows and
graduate students interested in vision research or a MSc or PhD degree in
vision research at Dalhousie University. We are a multidisciplinary
research group with specialties in both basic and clinical research. The
Retina and Optic Nerve Research Laboratory is located in a brand-new
state-of-the-art facility in the Medical Faculty at Dalhousie University,
Halifax, Nova Scotia. Faculty members in the group carry out research into
retinal synaptic transmission, receptors and cellular signaling pathways,
as well as into mechanisms underlying various retinal neurodegenerative
diseases such as glaucoma, retinal ischemia and inherited retinopathies.
Members of the Retina and Optic Nerve Research Laboratory have
expertise in electrophysiological recording techniques, including
patch-clamp recording of ion channels, intracellular recording and
electroretinogram, receptor pharmacology and cell signaling,
immunocytochemistry, molecular biology, fluorescent cell imaging and in
vivo confocal scanning ophthalmoscopy. Individual members have primary
appointments in the Departments of Physiology and Biophysics (Dr. Steven
Barnes), Anatomy and Neurobiology (Dr. William Baldridge), Pharmacology
(Dr. Melanie Kelly) and Ophthalmology (Drs. Balwantray Chauhan, Francois
Tremblay).
Students interested in a graduate degree in vision research should
contact the Dr. Melanie Kelly (mkelly@is.dal.ca), for details on academic
requirements, funding and projects. Further information about Dalhousie
University can be found at the webpage: www.dal.ca and on the Laboratory
