ARVO SIG #11 will be held on Wed., May 12 from 1:30-3:30 PM in Ballroom D. The
title is Retinal Apoptosis: Mechanisms and Protection. There will be five
10-15 talks with much time for active discussion. Also, it is anticipated that
there will brief 5 minute presentations from those attending. Please come
prepared to listen, discuss and present your interesting data on mechanisms of
retinal apoptosis.

Retinal Apoptosis: Mechanisms and Protection; organized by Donald A. Fox,
Ph.D., Univ. Houston, College of Optometry, Houston, TX 77204-6052, Phone:
(713)743-1964, FAX: (713)743-2053, E-MAIL: dafox@uh.edu and Nagahisa
Yoshimura, M.D., Ph.D., Shinshu Univ. School of Medicine, Dept. Ophthalmology,
Matsumoto 390-8621, Japan, Phone: Int-263-37-2662, FAX: Int-263-32-9448,
E-MAIL: nagaeye@hsp.md.shinshu-u.ac.jp.
Retinal apoptotic cell death occurs during different pathophysiological
conditions, disease states, inherited disorders and environmental insults.
The retinal cell types affected vary considerably depending upon the type,
intensity and duration of the initiating stimuli and age of insult. Moreover,
the mechanisms underlying the apoptotic signaling process vary. Presentations
will address these issues and focus on neuroprotection. Speakers: Overview and
mechanisms of calcium-induced rod photoreceptor apoptosis: A focus on
mitochondria (Donald A. Fox, Univ. Houston), The nuclear transcription factor
NF-kB regulates apoptosis of photoreceptor cells (Neeraj Agarwal, Univ. North
Texas Hlth. Sci. Cntr.), p53 and bax in retinal apoptosis (Robert W. Nickells,
Univ. Wisconsin), Retinal apoptosis and the cell cycle (Nagahisa Yoshimura,
Shinshu Univ.), Retinal ischemia-reperfusion injury and neuroprotection (Tim
Lam, Hong Kong Univ.). Open and lively discussions and presentations from the
floor will be encouraged.
