POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS IN VISION AND ACTION
Three postdoctoral positions, beginning September 1, 1999, are
available in an international collaboration funded by the Human
Frontiers Science Program. There is one position available at
each of three sites:
(1) The Department of Psychology, University of Glasgow,
(2) The Department of Psychology and Center for Neural Science,
New York University, and
(3) The Department of Psychology, University of Tokyo.
The research project concerns the combination of cues to depth for
perceptual judgments and motor acts (reaching, grasping and
locomotion), as viewed from a perspective of Bayesian decision-making.
All of the following are desirable in a candidate: (1) programming
skills, especially with computer graphics and virtual reality, (2) a
strong mathematical or natural science background, (3) previous work
with computer-controlled psychophysical experiments in perception or
motor coordination, (4) numerical analysis and modeling experience.
The vision group in Glasgow brings together people with research
interests covering visual psychophysics, mid-level perception, and
visual cognition. Work includes motion perception, three-dimensional
perception, interaction with virtual humans, human face recognition,
natural scene perception and flexible scale perception.
The NYU vision group includes over 20 faculty members spanning 6
departments. It includes research in all areas of visual science
including psychophysics, computational and mathematical modeling and

The group in Tokyo is in collaboration with the Intelligent
Modeling Laboratory at the University of Tokyo. Under this
collaboration, an immersive virtual reality environment called
CABIN (Computer Augmented Booth for Image Navigation) was created.

Each appointment is initially for one year, renewable up to three
