PHD STUDENTSHIPS AND POSTDOC POSITIONS
AT UNIVERSITY OF LEUVEN, BELGIUM

3-D OBJECT PERCEPTION

AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PROJECT involving human psychophysics, single-cell
recordings in the macaque monkey, and computer vision is looking for
interested and qualified researchers. Funding is available for 2 PhD
fellowships for 3 years (1115 Euro/month) and several postdocs for 1
year
with the possibility of renewal (1485 Euro/month). Researchers with a
strong background in any of the three disciplines and the motivation to
participate in an interdisciplinary consortium of researchers are
especially encouraged to apply.

The project has two major components: (1) depth perception based on
multiple sources of information (stereo, texture, motion) and (2) the
role of 3-D object structure in object identification from different
viewpoints. Several smaller projects will be started to tackle specific
questions from an interdisciplinary perspective (e.g., computational
modeling of cue interaction results discovered psychophysically and
electrophysiologically; geometric description of 3-D object structure
relevant to biological vision).

Each of the three participating laboratories has strong, well-funded
research programs in the area of vision, with superb research
facilities:
- Johan Wagemans (Experimental Psychology,
http://www.psy.kuleuven.ac.be/~johanw/)
- Rufin Vogels and Philip Joris (Neurosciences,
http://www.kuleuven.ac.be/facdep/medicine/dep_neu/neufys/)
- Luc Van Gool (Computer Vision,
http://www.esat.kuleuven.ac.be/psi/visics.html).
The University of Leuven actively fosters interdisciplinary labmeetings,

journal clubs, seminars, and courses.

Starting date is open to negotiation (between July and December 1999)
but
interested candidates are encouraged to apply before June 20th by
sending (1) a letter of intent which includes research experience,
interests, and goals, (2) a CV and publication list, and (3) name and
address of three people who can send letters of reference if we ask
them.
