This position requires writing and modifying existing computer programs for
laboratory data collection and analysis. This requires experience with
real time control of experimental protocols and interfacing with
experimental equipment. Familiarity with the Macintosh operating system is
required, plus familiarity with C and experience with UNIX. Documentation
of all programs is required. The programmer needs to work independently
and make evaluation for feasibility of particular experiments given
existing experimental devices and computer capabilities. Interaction with
the supervisor is required for this. The programmer must work
independently to complete specific projects, and instruct other members of
the laboratory concerning the use of the programs for ongoing projects.
He/she must also coordinate programming aspects of the various projects
ongoing in the laboratory. Full support of existing systems is required,
including modifications for new applications. Familiarity with the
scientific content of the research and the scientific goals is important.
The applicant must also keep abreast of recent developments and advise the
supervisor on both hardware and software updating of the computer systems
in the laboratory. Since the experiments require real time control of
unique devices it is also important for the employee to be able to learn
how to work with new systems.
