First Call for papers:
The Aging Retina and Early Degeneration
November 11-13, 1999
Starr Conference Center
Schepens Eye Research Institute
Boston, Massachusetts
http://color.eri.harvard.edu/agingretina/
Abstract Submission Deadline: September 13, 1999
Electronic submission preferred to
agingretina@vision.eri.harvard.edu
Registration fee: $70- includes 2 lunches with all participants
Goal: To investigate how the normal retina develops; how it changes with
aging;
what are the consequences of insults to the retina, retinal pigment
epithelium,
and blood supply; and what are the possible rescue and repair mechanisms. We
want to open dialogs among colleagues who study either aging or 2) early
degenerative changes to the eye. The registration fee is low to encourage
graduate students and post-docs to attend.
Scope: We seek papers with the broadest range of techniques, including but not
limited to:
molecular genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, regulation of neural cell
function, anatomy and histochemistry, physiology, imaging, models of aging,
basic neuroscience, models of cell death, visual function in aged people,
studies with family members or patients, visual function in patients with
early
degeneration, models of early degeneration, nutritional factors, repair
mechanisms, ocular blood flow, epithelial cell changes, light damage,
oxidative
damage in neural tissues, and lifespan changes in mammalian retina.
Format: We plan a highly interactive format, beginning with a general
introduction to the structure of the mammalian retina and proceed include
human, experimental, genetic, and biochemical approaches. We will integrate
two broad themes: the developmental changes with aging and the stresses on the
aged eye. Talks will typically be roughly 25 minutes, with 5 minutes of
general introduction and 20 minutes of detailed description. We have in-house
and invited speakers who will include summaries of their fields. We encourage
participants to attend from related areas in basic brain or other neuroscience
research or other aging diseases such as Alzheimer's Disease.
Organizing committee:
Ann E. Elsner, Francois C. Delori, Dong-Feng Chen, Michael Young
Program committee:
Stephen A. Burns, Max Snodderly, Alice Adler
Confirmed Speakers to date from outside Schepens Eye Research Institute:
Michael Boulton, Cardiff University
Connie Cepko, Harvard University
Peter Coffee, University of Sheffield
Christine Curcio, University of Alabama
Garry Handelman, Tufts University
Anita Hendrickson, University of Washington
Ann Milam, university of Washington
Gary Rubin, the Johns Hopkins University
Julie Sandell, Boston University
Marilyn Schneck, University of California at Berkeley and Smith-Kettlewell
Hermann Steller, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
JamesVer Hoeve, University of Wisconsin
This is Veteran's Day week-end. The first talk will not be until 9:30 A.M. on
Thursday to allow for same-day travel from the East Coast and night before
travel from distant locations. We have reserved a block of rooms in the
building adjacent to the conference hall. We are near excellent public
transportation.
Our conference hall holds only 220 people. Please register early, if you plan
to attend whether you submit a paper or not. You need not present a paper to
participate in an active manner. We are seeking moderators and possible panel
discussants. We plan roughly 40 to 55 presentation slots. Should there be a
need for more slots, we will expand by adding either posters or slots after
lunch on Saturday. Could you At 12:21 PM 7/6/99 -0700, you wrote:
