POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH IN VISUAL PSYCHOPHYSICS

CITY UNIVERSITY in collaboration with BIRMINGHAM UNIVERSITY

We (Steve Hammett and Mark Georgeson) are looking to appoint an experienced
vision researcher to a two- or three-year postdoctoral position in visual
psychophysics funded by the Wellcome Trust.

The post is for work on a collaborative experimental & theoretical study of
edge detection, perceived blur and blur discrimination. The project will
follow up our recent work on 'motion sharpening' [ Hammett S T, Georgeson M
A, Gorea A (1998) Motion blur and motion sharpening: temporal smear and
local contrast non-linearity. Vision Research 38, 2099-2108] and will
develop and test further our proposed model in which perceptual distortion
(sharpening or blurring) of moving edges is produced by the non-linear
contrast response of the magnocellular pathway at high speeds and in
peripheral vision.

The post will be held at the Department of Optometry & Visual Science, City
University, London, starting at an agreed date after August 1999. A current
doctoral student would have to have submitted his/her thesis before taking
up the post.

Main requirements are experience of doing systematic experimental work in
visual psychophysics or experimental psychology, especially in the areas of
spatial vision and/or motion perception. Experience of working with and
programming graphics systems on a PC, especially the VSG graphics system in
'C', would be advantageous. Some experience of visual modelling (esp. in
MatLab) would also be advantageous, but not essential. Initiative,
enthusiasm and dedication to the study of vision are vital.

The post is for two years, but could be extended by a further year for a
candidate who has appropriate skills in visual modelling as well as
experimentation. Salary will be within Wellcome Level 2, equivalent to
postdoctoral academic scale RA1A, and will include London weighting
allowance.

The work will be housed in a new vision laboratory, located at the City
University in central London.
