GENERIC CALIBRATOR FOR VISION EXPERIMENTS
REQUEST FOR FEEDBACK
Are you interested in a low-cost automated calibrator for vision
experiments (or any other application)? For several years,
Smith-Kettlewell has produced an automated calibrator for Macintosh
monitors, able to provide a 768 value linearization table for a Mac monitor
in about 15 minutes. The result is a usable contrast range up to about 98%
contrast. The device is provided to the vision community at cost on a
non-commercial basis.
Apple's switch from the ADB bus to the more generic USB bus has
precipitated a need to redesign the calibrator hardware. for use with
current iMac models (although an ADB port is still provided with the G3 and
G4 models). The USB bus is in widespread use on PC computers. What we do
no know is how many PC users have a need for accurate calibration. The
question on which we would like feedback is therefore:
Would you be interested in purchasing an automated calibrator for your PC
computer?
Aniticipated price: $500 -$1000 (at our production cost)
Accuracy of linearization: ~1% (or one step of the look-up table, if greater).
Sotware inclusive.

(Please let any potentially interested colleagues know of this possibility
also.)

By the way, if you are a Mac user, the USB based calibrator is curently out
of production, but we have a loaner available for a week's loan if you wish
to to get your monitor calibrated one time. Operates on all Macs except
the iMac.
Also, please contact me if you are interested in the latest version of our
Morphonome psychophysics software, please contact as above. This version
allows measurement of the contrast threshold of any predefined file image
on a Macintosh system. All you have to do is provide the image file. (NB,
contrast thresholds, contrast masking and contrast matching psychophysics
only).
