    Subject: Vacancy

    Vacancy: Postdoc position
    Field: Vision Science
Location: Helmholtz Institute, Utrecht University, The Netherlands

We invite applicants for the position of post-doctoral researcher in a
programme of research in Vision Science (Biology, Biophysics, Neurophysics,
    Psychology).

    Research Topic:
An important source of information for the recovery of the 3D lay-out of
our environment is the spatial difference (disparity) between the retinal
images of our two eyes. Why depth perception is stable during eye and head
movements---although these movements introduce large and noisy differences
between the retinal images---is an unresolved and important problem. The
computation of disparities depends upon the correct identification of
corresponding features in the two retinal images. The goal of the research
programme is to determine which mechanisms play a role in this
identification. Subsequently we will develop a model for stable 3D
perception in dynamic circumstances. Such a model should give us a better
understanding of how the brain works and will also be helpful for a number
of practical applications in the field of mobile navigating robots and
    medical diagnostics.

    We offer:
An appointment for two years starting Spring 2000. Gross salary is
competative and will range between 1,865 and 2,956 EURO (about equivalent
to $) per month (depending on qualifications and experiences). The yearly
salary is supplemented by an annual holiday bonus of 8% gross (42 Holidays
a year; allowance to compensate costs of private health-insurance of at
least 77 EURO per month.) The Helmholtz Institute combines research groups
that have internationally acknowledged positions in their disciplines.
Concepts and methods from neurophysiology, biophysics, psychophysics and
psychology are integrated. Excellent scientists work together in an
organisational structure, which results in extensive collaboration and
optimal exchanges of ideas, knowledge and methods. In addition, the
institute provides a fruitful atmosphere for the development of young,
promising scientists who are encouraged to create and realise innovative
research plans. Utrecht is a beautiful and historic city. It is very close
to Amsterdam and relatively close to London, Paris and the Swiss Alps.

    We ask:
Applicants should have a Ph.D. and research experience in one or more areas
of visual science, preferably including visual psychophysics and software
programming. Applicants should send their curriculum vitae, publication
list and names of 2 referees preferably within 2 weeks to:
