    31st Carnegie symposium on

Perceptual Organization in Vision: Behavioral and Neural perspectives

June 2 ~4, 2000 at Carnegie Mellon University

Understanding visual perceptual organization remains a challenge for
vision science. The central aim of this symposium is to exchange ideas
    emanating from behavioral, developmental, neurophysiological,
neuropsychological and computational approaches to the problem of visual
perceptual organization. The growing body of research on perceptual
organization has converged on a number of critical issues, many of which
will be addressed in this symposium. These include issues concerning the
stimulus factors that engage the mechanisms of organization, the
temporal stage of processing at which organization occurs, and the
relations between perceptual organization and object recognition and
between perceptual organization and visual attention. In addition,
speakers will focus on open questions revolving around the developmental
stage at which mechanisms of organization are available and the role of
past experience and learning in perceptual organization. A further theme
will be devoted to understanding the neural and computational mechanisms
underlying perceptual organization. Speakers include Thomas Albright,
Marlene Behrmann, Robert Goldstone, Glyn Humphreys, David Jacobs, Philip
Kellman, Ruth Kimchi, Michael Kubovy, Tai Sing Lee, Amy Needham, Carl
Olson, Stephen Palmer, Mary Peterson, Rudiger von der Heydt.
