Subject: PostDoc in Visual Optics at Indiana University
Larry Thibos will be available at ARVO to discuss the following positions
with interested candidates.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS IN VISUAL OPTICS
School of Optometry, Indiana University
Applications are invited for two postdoctoral positions in Prof. Larry
Thibos's laboratory in the Visual Optics Group at Indiana University. The
first position, funded by the National Eye Institute, will be to
investigate how optical and retinal factors constrain the quality of human
visual experience. New technology for measuring the optical aberrations of
eyes, based on the Shack-Hartmann principle for wavefront sensing, will be
used to determine the physiological basis of ocular imperfections in normal
and clinically abnormal eyes. In addition, adaptive optics technology for
manipulating and correcting the eye's aberrations will be used as a tool to
study the visual effects of various types of ocular aberrations.
The second position, which we expect to be funded by industrial sources,
will center on the development of new technologies for correcting the eye's
ocular aberrations. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to
work closely with colleagues from other institutions as part of an
international development team.
Qualifications for these positions include a Ph.D. and a strong background
in optics, visual optics, or visual science. Applications will be reviewed
beginning immediately and positions will remain open until filled.
The Visual Optics Group is part of Indiana University's graduate program in
visual science. It provides a rich scientific environment with significant
collaboration between experts in optical science, cornea and contact
lenses, ocular and retinal physiology, psychophysics, ophthalmic optics,
ocular disease, anatomy, and neuroscience. A clinical patient population
is easily accessible through our internal Borish Center for Ophthalmic
Research. The Visual Optics Group has recently been awarded part of an NSF
Science & Technology Center grant to develop adaptive optics for measuring
and correcting the aberrations in the human eye. This five year project,
directed at Indiana University by Prof. Donald Miller, will center on the
development of a high-resolution retinal camera that will combine adaptive
optics with optical coherence tomography.
Indiana University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer.
Applicants should send a CV, a summary of research interests, and the names
of three references to:
