Subject: Job Openings, Visual Analysis Group, IBM T.J. Watson Research
Center
We are looking for creative researchers to join the Visual Analysis
Group at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. The goal of our group is
to develop visual methods and tools to help people gain insight from data.
This involves 1) experimental studies in visual perception, including color
vision, shape and texture perception, image and object analysis 2) the
development of software tools based on these studies, and 3) the
development of prototype applications, in collaboration with domain
experts,based on these tools.
Since understanding complex systems often involves many types of data,
our recent focus has been on the identification and characterization of
features defined across multiple data types. For example, a medical
researcher may want to understand how gene expression levels influence
the parameters of a finite element simulation of cardiac excitation,
and see how these differences play out on a 3-D representation of the
heart. Our goal is to build an understanding of the perceptual and
cognitive processes involved in identifying and interacting with
multivariate features, and to build tools and applications
to support this type of analysis.
Research Scientist position: This person should be a PhD scientist,
specializing in psychophysics, perception, cognition, computational
vision,
image processing, computer vision, visualization, or a related
discipline.
This person will be expected to create an independent research agenda,
to publish and patent his or her contributions, and to interact closely
with the group's multidisciplinary team and collaborators. This person
should also have good software and quantitative skills, and a keen
interest in visual problem solving.
Programmer: This person should have excellent programming skills
(e.g., Java, C++, ActiveX, Visual Basic) and 3-5 years of experience.
The job involves developing interactive software tools for visual
data analysis and prototyping interactive applications using these
libraries. We are especially looking for applicants who have
experience with visualization and graphics software, statistical
analysis, and with the creation of GUIs and interactive end-user
applications. Experience developing software for perception
experiments would also be a plus.
Post-doc: This is an excellent opportunity for recent PhDs in
related disciplines and for international students interested in
working in the US for 1-2 years.
Some recent projects include:
- Heart simulation (described above), with Johns Hopkins University
- Analysis and functional 3-d reconstruction of histological slices
with Mass General Hospital
- Visual data mining with a major airline
- Visual analysis of a Monte Carlo risk analysis simulation
- Visual analysis of foreign exchange options
- Information visualization of executive business data at a glance
- Interactive analysis of event data for systems management
- Perceptually-based image query for digital libraries
We are also interested in internet color, art and perception, intelligent
systems, interactive web-based visualization, bioinformatics,
information visualization, 3-D geometry and texture, visual database
queries and Gestalt psychology.
