Work Period: 3 months, summer 1998
Note: This is very flexable, and we may hire for part time
over the school year, and full time over some or all of
the
summer. The project must be completed by the end of
August,
however.
Location: Hewlett Packard Laboratories, Palo Alto

Required Skills:
Java, CGI Scripting, HTML
Applicant must be in a university graduate program.

Desired Skills:
Java and browser based graphics, computer graphics, statistics, visual
perception, psychophysics, additional programming skills, user
interface
design, human factors analysis, computer display calibration.

Job Description:

1. Construct a web-based reading experiment. The experiment will
consist
of two main parts. First, develop a tool with a user interface for
calibrating the computer display and the viewing environment. This tool
must also record survey question responses. This tool may require
development in CGI and Java. Second, develop a tool that can administer
a reading performance test. This will require a timed presentation of
image files, and may require Java or animated GIF files.

2. Statistically analyze the data, and present the data on the web.
Present a one hour talk and a demonstration of the web tools.

Final decision for filling this position may not be made until the
