The National Eye Institute wishes to alert the vision research
community that it is participating with six other NIH Institutes and
Centers in a $4 million initiative to solicit two-year,
exploratory/developmental research grant (R21) applications to
demonstrate feasibility and to obtain preliminary data testing
innovative ideas for the treatment of diabetic complications.

"Pilot Studies for New Therapies for Type I Diabetes and Its
Complications" is a Request for Applications (RFA) to encourage
high risk/high impact research to identify new targets for
intervention and generate new therapeutic strategies. Talented new
investigators and established investigators not currently working in
diabetes are particularly encouraged to apply. Further information
is available on the NEI web page ( http://www.nei.nih.gov ).
Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact NEI
program director Peter A. Dudley, Ph.D. (301-496-0484,
pad@nei.nih.gov ) to discuss their application. The full text of the
RFA, which requires a letter of intent by March 1, 1999, and has a
single receipt date, March 30, 1999, is available on the NIH web
site:
