We are pleased to announce that a special symposium entitled:
Eye movements and vision in the natural world
will take place on September 27, 28 and 29, 2000, in Amsterdam and
Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
The proceedings of the conference will be published as a special
issue of Vision Research.
Scope of Conference:
This conference will bring together researchers whose work has
contributed to the understanding of eye movements and vision under
natural conditions. Natural conditions can be established by
allowing freedom of head motion, by providing richly-structured 3-
dimensional visual scenes, or by studying the eye movements used
to accomplish purposeful cognitive or motor tasks. We are asking
participants to present their latest original findings and outline
a vision for the 21st century in a forum that is designed to
promote lively discussion and debate.
The topics to be covered at the conference, all to be approached
from either behavioral, neural or computational perspectives,
include:
-coordination of movements of the head and eye
-binocular gaze control in 3-dimensional space
-gaze control and eye movements in freely-moving observers
-visual navigation and optical flow
-perception of location and depth in dynamic scenes
visually-guided reaching
-the role of visual attention and memory in oculomotor
programming
-using eye movements to build representations of visual scenes
-strategies for efficient acquisition of visual information in
complex tasks
-neural mechanisms responsible for the planning and initiation
of eye movements
This conference will also serve to honor Professor Han Collewijn
on the occasion of his 65th birthday and formal retirement from
his post as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Physiology
at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam.
Format of Conference:
Invited lectures will provide an overview of the most recent key
developments in the field.
All other participants may submit abstracts for presentation at a
poster session to be held on the third day of the conference.
Travel fellowships will be available for a limited number of young
scientists (either students or those within 5 years of receiving Ph.D.)
whose abstracts are accepted for presentation at the poster session.

Venue:
The first two days of the conference will be held in the 16th
century building of the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences located
along one of the canals right in the center of Amsterdam.
Amsterdam is the historical and cultural center of the
Netherlands.
The third day of the conference will be held at the Erasmus
University in Rotterdam.
Rotterdam is the modern and vibrant main seaport of the
Netherlands. It features many examples of modern architecture, one
of which is the conspicuous high-rise building of the Medical
Faculty where the third day of the conference will be held.
The two cities are within one hour train distance from each other,
- with Schiphol International Airport conveniently located in
between.
Accommodation:
Participants can arrange hotel accommodation through the Erasmus
Medical Congress Organization. We will provide detailed
information shortly. Participants can stay in the hotel booked in
Amsterdam throughout the meeting. Transportation from Amsterdam
to Rotterdam and back on the third day by train or bus will be
provided.
For more information please send a short e-mail message to:
The message should refer to the title of the symposium (" Eye
movements and vision in the natural world"), and contain your full
address, phone, faxnumber and e-mail address.
Also indicate whether you are planning to submit an abstract and,
if so, provide a preliminary abstract title.
The conference is limited to 200 participants, so please respond
