At the Cognitive Psychology department of the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam,
The Netherlands, visual attention is studied by means of reaction-time and
eye movement experiments. Several faculty members, postdocs and
Ph.D.-students work in this area, chaired by Prof. dr. J. Theeuwes. The
department is part of EPOS, a Graduate School for Experimental Psychology in
which several universities collaborate. The department has two Ph.D.
    positions available.

Project 1: Saccadic target selection during visual search
    vacancy number: 2548.2000196

During visual search, people generally make many eye movements. The way
these eye-movements are controlled by internal factors (e.g., intention) and
external factors (e.g., the saliency of an object in the visual field) is as
yet unclear. By determining eye movement patterns during visual search
tasks, this project aims to determine the relative contribution of these
factors to the control of eye movements.

Project 2: Response selection in visual search
    vacancy number: 2548.2000197

The role of visual attention in selecting information from the visual field
has been studied extensively using visual search tasks. However, a very
important aspect of those tasks, the production of an actual response, has
not received much consideration. Studying response selection might prove
very useful to allow a choice between rivaling theories of visual attention.
Therefore, response selection in visual search is a central theme in the
    present project.

    Job requirements
The successful candidate has a master in experimental psychology or related
area; has an interest in research and theory concerning human visual
processing and attention; has a good knowledge of methodology; experience in
conducting empirical research; good writing skills; programming experience.

Both positions are for 4 years and should lead to the graduation of the
candidate at the end of the last year.

    Information
More information, including a specification of both projects, can be
    obtained from dr. Mieke Donk, tel. 3120 444 8797, e-mail: w.donk@psy.vu.nl
    (Project 1) and dr. Peter A. Starreveld, tel. 3120 444 8829, e-mail:
pa.starreveld@psy.vu.nl (Project 2). General information regarding the
department can be obtained from http://www.psy.vu.nl/cogpsy
Applicants should send a cover letter and a CV, preferably by e-mail, either
to dr. Donk (Project 1) or to dr. Starreveld (Project 2). Letters should be
    received before June 19, 2000.
