POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AVAILABLE
Postdoctoral Fellow needed to work in retinal neurobiology and vision at
the University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine. Calgary is a rapidly
growing city of almost 1 million, located within view of the magnificent
Canadian Rockies. The research program is supported by a new 3-year
grant from the National Eye Institute (USA) to investigate the retinal
bases for control of ocular growth and refraction. The long-term goal is
to understand the causes, and develop novel therapies for, myopia
(near-sightedness) and hyperopia (far-sightedness). The experiments will
involve selective visual stimulation, immunocytochemical detection of
inducible factors in retinal neurons, tracing of synaptic connection in
the retina with confocal immunofluorescence and immuno-EM, and
manipulation of retinal circuit functions with conventional
pharmacological agents and antisense oligodeoxynucleotides. Prior
experience in some of these techniques and familiarity with retina and
visual processing are required. The research will be conducted in the
supportive environment of a large and strong Neuroscience Research
Group. The position will be funded initially by the NEI grant, but the
successful applicant will be expected to compete for an external
Fellowship from the CIHR or AHFMR. Interested parties please send a CV,
a one-page statement of research interests and career goals, and names
and contact information of three references by December 1, 2000, to:
