Packet audio and video R&D
Member of Technical Staff
Bell Laboratories
Bell Laboratories of Lucent Technologies is looking for candidates to
join an energetic and entrepreneurial team working on problems in packet
network design. The Multimedia Perception Assessment Center (MPAC) is
focused on performance issues for new communication technologies.
More specifically, we are helping teams to optimize the performance of
audio and video signal transmission. The tools we use span the range
from objective signal analysis to subjective testing (e.g., end-user
tests such as MOS). Our projects are a mix of short-term work assisting
product/network teams, and long-term work focused on fundamental
performance problems. Given Lucent’s broad portfolio, the technologies
of interest include all the new protocols for both wired and wireless
transmission media.
The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in audio, video,
multimedia, communications systems and human perception. If you can
demonstrate expertise in some of the following areas, you will be an
excellent fit: speech/audio/video signal processing, audio/video system
design and evaluation, packet network protocols, QoS and telephony. A
strong understanding of good experimental design and well-developed
analytical skills are required. The position will challenge you to come
up to speed quickly in important related areas such as subjective
testing and perception. Additionally, appropriate skills for this
position include experience using test equipment, PC data acquisition
systems, and a proficiency in programming in C, PowerBuilder/Visual
Basic and/or MATLAB. Success in this position will also require
excellent oral and written communications skills, and the sincere desire
to work in a team atmosphere. A MS or PhD (or equivalent job
experience) is required for this position.
