Vision, Image Processing, and Sound (VIPS) Laboratory
Dipartimento Scientifico e Tecnologico
Universita degli Studi di Verona
Verona, ITALY
RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS AVAILABLE
Due to success in EU funding, we are seeking to fill a number of
vacancies as soon as possible.
Applications are invited for several Research Fellowships (graduates
and postdocs) position on the EU projects ARROV and SOb. The length of
these appointments are from 2-3 years, although shorter periods may be
considered in certain circumstances.
The aim of the ARROV (Augmented Reality for Remotely Operated Vehicles
based on 3D acoustical and optical sensors for underwater inspection
and survey) project is the development of Remotely Operated Vehicles
(ROVs) for inspection, monitoring and survey of underwater
environments and manmade installations (as oil rigs). In particular,
the VIPS laboratory is involved in work on augmented reality interface
and 3D model acquisition from both acoustic and optical sensors.
The SOb (the Sounding Object) project aims at developing versatile and
efficient sound models that are based on the physics of
sound-generating phenomena, thus being easily integrated within
artefacts and appliances that interact physically with humans. The
SOb project is part of the IST-FET Disappearing Computer proactive
initiative.
Applicants should hold, or expect to hold by the appointment date, a
degree in either computer science, computer engineering, physics or a
related scientific discipline. Good programming and scientific writing
skills are essential. A PhD or previous research experience will be an
advantage. The candidates, who are expected to work in a international
framework, should have good familiarity with written and spoken
english.
The successful candidates for the ARROV positions should have
competencies in image processing and analysis. Specific experience
in 3D computer vision and computer graphics will be appreciated.
The successful candidates for the SOb positions should have
competencies in audio signal processing and sound synthesis.
Specific experience in physical modeling or auditory display will
be appreciated.
The Vision, Image Processing, and Sound (VIPS) Laboratory was
established in the Dipartimento Scientifico e Tecnologico at the
University of Verona in 1999 with the goal of doing theoretical and
applied research in the fields of Computer Vision, Image Processing
and Sound Processing. Our research is focused both on investigating
the underlying scientific principles and on the application to
problems of real-world importance. The VIPS laboratory includes
currently 2 faculty members and 4 research assistants and PhD
students.
Expected inception of employment: January - February 2000
