A post-doctoral position in human visual navigation is available in the
Dept. of Cognitive & Linguistic Sciences at Brown University. The
project investigates how spatial knowledge about a new environment is
learned and used for active navigation in humans and robots. Research
is based in the Virtual Environment Navigation Lab (VENLab), a unique
40 x 40 ft virtual reality lab that incorporates an Intersense
sonic/inertial tracker, Kaiser head-mounted display, and SGI graphics,
allowing complete manipulation of the visual environment. Training
will be provided in visual perception, spatial cognition, and
interactive research using VR techniques.

learning, and landmark recognition. Graduate training in human
experimental research is essential.

VENLab facility, including SGI system management and equipment
troubleshooting. Technical ability is important.

programming. Experience with Unix/Irix, C++, Open GL, and World
ToolKit is desirable.
The position is available immediately (pending administrative approval)
and funding is guaranteed at least through Sept, 2001. The project is
under the direction of Drs. William Warren, Michael Tarr, and Leslie
Kaelbling, funded by a Learning and Intelligent Systems grant from the
