    EPSRC STUDENTSHIP

    3-D Vision and Eye Movements

    October 2001

    Department of Psychology,
    University of Newcastle upon Tyne,

Understanding how the brain works is arguably the biggest challenge facing
science at the start of the 21st Century. Vision is one of the most widely
investigated functions of the brain, and its scientific study attracts, and
benefits from, the interests of psychologists, physicists, biologists,
philosophers, computer scientists, artists and mathematicians.

A PhD position is available to study human binocular vision and eye
movements with Dr. Julie M. Harris, starting October 2001. The student
will be joining the vision lab which is part of the Neural Systems Group at
Newcastle. We're interested in understanding what the brain can do, and
how it does it, in the context of its current and evolutionary environment.

The challenge: to learn scientific skills and write a thesis related to
these questions: How does the visual system put together left and right
eye views to see in 3D? How does eye movement information aid binocular
    perception?

Qualifications: Above all, an enthusiasm to explore how vision works
(You'll get the opportunity to learn or improve on: computer programming,
measuring motor behaviour including eye movements, psychophysical
experimentation, hardware/software interfacing.). You'll need to have or
expect to get a 2:1 or 1st class degree.

Application: CV and letter expressing why you wish to undertake a PhD in
this area. There is no formal deadline but students will be interviewed
    from 10th May 2001.
